Recap - American Horror Story: Hotel (Ep. 1)

hotel cortez.jpg

American Horror Story: Hotel, Season 5, Episode 1
Title: "Checking In"
Aired: 10/7/2015

Synopsis: In this premiere, we meet quite a few of the characters who occupy the Hotel Cortez; Iris (Kathy Bates), Hypodermic Sally (Sara Paulson), Det. John Lowe (Wes Bentley), (Donovan) Matt Bomer, Dr. Alex Lowe (Chloë Sevingny), Liz Taylor (Denis O'Hare), Will Drake (Cheyenne Jackson), The Countess (Lady Gaga), and Gabriel (Max Greenfield).

The Hotel Cortez seems to be a place where people come to stay...forever! Kidding aside, that's one of the main pieces of info we learn in this episode. The other is that Det. Lowe has been working a grisly case involving a very creative serial killer. He's checking into the Cortez because his son has been kidnapped (presumably by the serial killer) and his wife, Alex, can't be in the same house as him on account of him looking so much like their missing son.

This first episode is definitely a setup for what could potentially be a pretty awesome season. Here's hoping they don't blow it.

31 | The Visit

Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Writer: M. Night Shyamalan
Starring: Olivia DeJong, Ed Oxenbould, Deanna Dunagan
Synopsis: Two kiddos travel to their grandparents' house - whom they've never met before - to visit for a week while their mom takes a cruise with her boyfriend.  At first, things seem to go fairly well; just kids getting used to your typical "weird old people" things. However, it isn't long before things begin to go from weird to WTAF.

Next on the menu...Eli Roth's bloody homage to cannibal-related horror, The Green Inferno. So pack a meal, gather your weak-stomached friends, and join us as we digest and dissect this gory flick.

30 | Sinister 2

Sinister 2
Director: Ciarán Foy
Writers: Scott Derrickson, C. Robert Cargill
Starring: Shannyn Sossamon, James Ransone, Robert Daniel Sloan, Dartanian Sloan
Synopsis: Picking up from where Sinister left off, now Ex Deputy So & So is tracking down and destroying all the Bughuul murder houses. But he's stopped short when he learns the next house on his list is already occupied by a woman and her two children. Not one to walk away from a family being harassed by Bughuul and his gang of evil kids, Ex Deputy So & So sticks around to help the family before it becomes too late.

Did you know there's a real-life Bughuul? Well there is and we've found him. Turns out he's been passing himself off as the lead guitarist of Slipknot. Honestly, now that we've seen the almost 100% resemblance, Bughuul is even less frightening and not all that original. I'm not even going to label which is which.

Join us next time as we "celebrate" the return of M. Night Shyamalan by watching his newest movie, The Visit. His track record is pretty spotty so we don't even have a guess as to how this new one is going to turn out. Till next time!

We need your help, listeners! If you like the show, if you think there is something we could do better, if there's a movie you think we should cover, if you love videos of adorable baby animals, we want to know about it!! What'd we think of What We Do in the Shadows?
(Out of 5 stars)

We spend a bit of time at the beginning of this episode discussing three trailers for upcoming movies. Looks like promising stuff! We're including them for your viewing pleasure.

Goodnight Mommy - in theaters September 11, 2015.

Next up, we're looking at a recent "haunted house" movie called, We are Still Here. Check out the trailer and then join us for our discussion!

27 | The Nightmare

The Nightmare
Director: Rodney Ascher
Synopsis: A documentary focused around interviews with eight different individuals, who all suffer from Sleep Paralysis.

If you find the subject of sleep paralysis as fascinating as we do, you should definitely check out this AskReddit thread about it. Also, this may just be a BuzzFeed article, but it explains a helluva lot more about the phenomenon than the movie does.

We're dying to hear your sleep paralysis stories. Leave us a comment down below!

For next time we'll be reviewing What We Do in the Shadows. Another documentary, though this one's a bit less...truthy, and more Flight of the Conchordsy.

26 | Late Phases

Late Phases
Director: Adrian Garcia Bogliano
Writer: Eric Stolze
Starring: Nick Damici, Ethan Embry
Synopsis: Blind Vietnam War veteran, Ambrose, is moved into a retirement community by his son, Ethan Embry. Not long after he moves in, Ambrose notices something strange about Crescent Bay; occupants keep dying grisly deaths and it seems to happen once a month, like clock work. Not one to put up with anyone's shit, let alone a rogue werewolf, Ambrose starts on a mission to take care of the problem once and for all.

What'd we think of Late Phases?
(Out of 5 stars)

For our next trick, we'll be watching The Nightmare, a documentary about sleep paralysis. We're straying away from your standard horror film a bit but we're sure it will be worth it because sleep paralysis is a terrifying concept. It has led to the myths of succubus and incubus, as well as "shadow men." At least one of our trio has experience with sleep paralysis so this should be an interesting and lively discussion!

25 | The Bloodlust Quarterly Review

For our 25th episode, we decided we'd mix it up a little and look back on the movies we've watched thus far. We talk about any rankings we'd like to change and why and we also rank them based on completely arbitrary categories. We have fun.

Next up, we'll be watching Late Phases. This werewolf flick is a refreshing step away from the recent slew of vampire and zombie movies we've been seeing. Plus, if that ain't enough to grab ya, Ethan Embry is in it.
